Chocolate contains an enticing series of carefully selected and mostly unpublished works shot by Marc Lagrange on Polaroid Chocolate film. More than just preliminary studies of his sophisticated image compositions, the photographs impress with their warm colors, rough textures, and painterly aesthetic. His sensual Polaroids are a powerful example of his craft, as well as his attention to detail.
My fascination with sculpture led me to seek out settings that somehow embody the sculptural arts. For this oeuvre we travelled to Pietrasanta (Italy), which has long enjoyed the patronage of artists, due to the region’s fine marble, which has been treasured since the days of Michelangelo. Staying closer to home, the Handelsbeurs in Antwerp was an irresistible temptation.
HOTEL MARITIME ROOM #58
Signed and numbered, published in an edition of only 300 copies. oom 58 is the perfect backdrop for this series of photographs, “Hotel Maritime # 58”. If anything, hotel rooms have one thing in common: hundreds, if not thousands, of people will pass through over the years.
Diamonds & pearls
This is Marc Lagrange’s first big international publication, distributed by teNeues, in 2013. This led to a number of international exhibitions in Miami, Austria, New York, Italy, etc.
“Diamonds and Pearls” is a celebration of lavishness and luxuriant love.
The title stands for 20 years of Marc Lagrange. Marc Lagrange created his “universe”: “Maison Lagrange”, a retrospective exhibition, in an urban villa in Antwerp. For 6 months, over 240 photographs were displayed in this exhibition.
This special occasion gave rise to an extra large format book, published in 2011. There are still a few Artist Proof Signed copies available.
The duotone photographs reproduced here are perfectly cast, well-considered, stylish and playful, without ever becoming to explicit. This chapter is a summary of these shots, which we realized on large-format Polaroid film. Published in a bound edition, the photographs are reproduced here on glossy paper, one to a page, or as a two page spread.
Lust is a beautiful, highly polished production jammed full of naked European models. What’s not to love? Dimensions are 13×11″ (33x28cm) and it contains 157 full-size photographs. Included is an interview with Lagrange (in English) as well as personal insights peppered throughout the book that discuss his methodology, approach, and such.
Marc prefers using big plates (8×10 inch) that guarantee him the sharpness and attention to detail he aims for. With one commission following another at top speed, Marc continued working at his personal work in his stylish studio – a former furniture factory in the city centre of Antwerp. This book brings the best of both these portfolios. A wonderful body of work, a delightful body of art.
